Welcome to St. Mary’s Catholic School
St. Mary’s School in Mansfield, Ohio takes great pride in their students and their history in Mansfield and Richland County. In 1950 the school was started in Mansfield on Newman Street. Grades 18 had an enrollment of 145 students. The present school and parish are now located east of Mansfield on State Rt. 42. The school was opened on August 5, 1969 and the first principal was Sr. Vivian. Masses were held in the school cafeteria by the pastor Fr. Bonifas and associate pastor Fr. Jerry Ceranowski until the church was dedicated on June 20, 1982 with Fr. Obergefell as pastor.
Student Masses are held weekly by Fr. Nelson Bever who serves as superintendent and pastor. St. Mary’s has 130 students preschool through eighth grade for the 2010-2011 school year. St. Mary’s has a morning and afternoon preschool program, an all day, everyday kindergarten program and still maintains grades 1-8.
Computer classes are offered as well as Physical Education, Music, Art and Life Skills to students. The school receives students from Ashland, Lexington, Lucas, Crestview, Crestline, and Mansfield. The majority of students are from the Madison Township area.
Students are very active in the community and the Student Council is involved in the promotion of school spirit. We were able to feed five families for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Canned goods were collected and we sent a pickup load full of food to Catholic Charities. Christmas cards were sent to the troops overseas. Students also attend Mass at a local nursing home and help with senior citizens luncheons at the school. Students support the missions with Sr. Anna Marie Mangette OSF/T as the adopted recipient of funds raised. The school formed a new organization called “Panther School Partners”. This organization meets bi-monthly and provides meals, entertainment and positive discussion about St. Mary’s and overseas most of the fund raising activities for the school. Friends of Education work the Madison Bingo and provide funds for classroom teachers. ABC Awards are given monthly at Mass and each class has an award winner for Academics, Behavior and Christian Attitude. The school also has an active School Advisory Council. Even though the cost of operating the school keeps increasing each year, the parishioners are dedicated to keep the St. Mary’s tradition alive.
St. Mary’s is often referred to as the “The best kept secret on Ashland Road”. The mission statement is “Shaping the Mind, Body, and Spirit of Tomorrow’s
Leaders”. St Mary’s is a place where students, parents and faculty join together to form a living Christian community in which people are bound together in mutual responsibility and cooperation. St. Mary School believes in the dignity of all human beings, regardless of their race, national origin, or creed.
